Marine Biology

Ebiosea Project

The EBIOSEA PROJECT aims to design an effective marine bioprospecting model which not only takes into consideration the sustainability of natural resources but strives to ecologically exploit marine resources. By means of careful planning and research the EBIOSEA project evaluates the enormous potential of marine organisms as sources of biomolecules that can in turn be successfully applied to human and animal health. Through experimental investigation, the EBIOSEA project has already confirmed the potential of marine biodiversity in supplying an array of novel natural active ingredients for nutraceutical development. The biomolecules already found, range in their origin from teleost & cartilaginous fishes, bivalve & cephalopod molluscs to macro-algae. These have resulted in an extensive portfolio of new compounds and we currently hold a total of more than 10 patents with proven therapeutic properties published in international scientific journals.

Insofar we have catalogued a total of 500 potential organisms classified by species, traditional and potential uses, composition analysis and ecosystem. Each species is careful tested and their suitability as potential active biomolecules is assessed against a set of specific guidelines.

The main objectives of the ebiosea project include:

1.
Comprehensive literature research on all related marine resources potentially exploitable.

2.
Search for biomolecules of marine origin with therapeutic properties.

3.
Development of an extensive database of marine specimens classified primordially for their potential therapeutic properties.

4.
Primary screening of isolated species found in the database through scientific experimental protocols which include an array of assays, isolation and elucidation of the structures of the active molecules.

5.
The development of marine biomolecules into commercial nutraceuticals applied to human and animal health.

6.
International academic and institutional collaborations for the ethical practice of marine bioprospecting.

7.
Marine ecology consultancy services.
