The Genetics of the Diet

Nutrigenetics studies how foods may interact with specific genes to increase the risk of common chronic diseases such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Certain types of cancers.

Nutrigenetics aims to clarify the effect of genetic variation on the interaction between diet and disease. Genes define susceptibility to a disease or condition, and environmental factors, such as diet and exercise, determine who among those susceptible will be more prone to develop the disease  in  question,   in   the  future.

Inter-individual genetic variation is a critical determinant of differences in nutrient requirements. Since your genetic makeup is fixed at birth, an individual may be able to alter diet or lifestyle to significantly reduce the risk of developing various common health conditions including cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

GOALS OF NUTRIGENETICS:
  • To establish dietary recommendations that have a high predictive value with respect to disease prevention.
  • To design effective dietary regimens for the management of complex chronic diseases.
