Introduction

Since its establishment, the department of biotechnology at ebiotec (E-DBT) has increasingly acquired access to the resources required to perform both its teaching and research activities. The activities of E-DBT can be summarised as the identification of the mechanisms involved in ageing, apoptosis and the development of in vitro screening systems to test candidate anti-cancer, anti-dementia drugs, as well as food allergy and food intolerances.

The   E-DBT   investigates    the    aging
mechanisms associated with a dysfunction of the immune system and the role of dietary components and their interactions with other environmental factors in age-associated changes of the immune and inflammatory responses. Research looks to reverse and/or delay the onset of these immunologic and age-related changes by appropriate dietary modifications and to determine the molecular mechanisms by which antioxidant and prooxidant nutrients modulate immune cell functions. The department has established clinical methods to identify which food and environmental factors are responsible of immune dysfunction, and of particular and recent interest is the use of nutraceuticals derived from marine organisms to optimise human biochemical parameters.
